Botox, or “Bro-Tox” as it has been termed is the most rapidly expanding aesthetic treatment in men. There are subtle but important differences to keep in mind when aesthetic physicians treat male patients. Despite having taken the initial step to schedule a consultation, men are usually less comfortable than women about discussing their aesthetic appearance, and tend to be more timid than women during their consultation.
Aesthetic procedures in men is still a relatively new phenomenon, and just like in other aspects of their lives, men may be less forthcoming about discussing their goals and concerns. Men, like women, may be seeking botulinum toxin treatment to achieve a more youthful appearance, but men in particular may be more motivated to improve their competitiveness in the workplace. There are differences in treating men and women with Botox or Dysport. Men should have a subtle relaxed and youthful appearance. Men’s eyebrows should be kept relatively low and horizontal, and there should be some movement in the forehead muscles of facial expression. On the otherhand, or sex, women’s eyebrows should be naturally arched and lifted.
When a man presents for aesthetic treatment consultation, they prefer to have the treatment done at that same visit, and don’t wish to have frequent follow up visits due to their work schedules. The first time that a man recieves Botox or Dysport, the treatment should be very conservative, treating only a few muscles so that the result is not a drastic change. With this approach, men are eased into aesthetic treatment without attention from family and friends (there are exceptions like Bruce Jenner, Joe Biden, etc.). Much more so than women, men do not wish to have anyone know that they have had cosmetic procedure performed. It is important for a man to choose a cosmetic surgeon who has artistic vision and knows the differences between treating the opposite sex.
