I am pleased to announce that our practice has added Coolsculpting by Zeltiq. CoolSculpting by Zeltiq recently gained FDA approval for non-surgical fat reduction. It works by applying targeted cold to the treatment area, freezing the fat just under the skin so that the cells die and are then expelled from the body in a natural process via the lymphatic system. The treatment takes approximately one hour per area and results are seen in a couple of months. 
Zeltiq has been proven effective in treating “love handles” and the anterior tummy area that are otherwise difficult areas to “lose the pooch” despite adequate exercise and a healthy diet. I have been following the safety and effectiveness of Zeltiq for the past two years. In properly selected patients, there is a 20 to 25% reduction of the targeted area.
Patients are evaluated in my office at their initial consultation to make sure that they are candidates for Zeltiq. There must be the proper amount of fat “pooching”, and no abdominal hernias. It is most important to identify the proper candidate as Zeltiq isn’t for everyone. Zeltiq is for subcutaneous fat, the fat that’s attached to the skin. Visceral fat which is deeper and surrounds the organs won’t be affected by this device. It is not for excessively large deposits of fat. CoolSculpting can be performed in other areas besides the stomach. Patients are also being treated in the inner thigh, “bra buldge” on the back, and even the upper arms.
It takes one hour to treat the tummy, and one hour each for love handles. The treatment is very tolerable, most patients read or use their computers during the session. Patients may return to normal activities after their treatment. It takes 2 to 3 months for optimal results. The treatment may be repeated multiple times for futher improvement.
