“I Don’t Shine if You Don’t Shine”
Lyrics from “Read My Mind” by The Killers
The current issue of VOGUE Magazine (Feb 2012) features an article by Maura Egan about her speckled and freckled forty-ish sun damaged skin. After consulting with NYC dermatologists she underwent Fraxel Dual treatment (1550 nanometer and 1927 nanometer wavelength laser) on her decolletage. Longing for a more “splotch-free complexion”, Ms. Egan achieved her goals. Even toned skin is a sign of youth. Our brains perceive contrasts ( uneven pigment) as aging. After Fraxel treatments one of the most common comments that we hear is, “Well, I certainly don’t miss wearing foundation (makeup)!” Not having to wear makeup is a definite sign of youthfulness.
Clear + Brilliant, an extremely low powered Fraxel non-ablative laser was briefly mentioned in the article. Clear + Brilliant was developed to increase laser sales to salons and medspas for very minimal downtime. As with most treatments, the shorter the downtime, the less results from the procedure. We use our Fraxel restore laser (1550 nanometer wavelength) at it’s lowest settings for patients who wish to have a Clear + Brilliant like treatment.
The advantage of Fraxel Dual over other lasers and IPLs is the elegant manner in which it erases sun damage so evenly. It is a perfect treatment for those in Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Los Angeles patients who cannot afford downtime. Immediately following the treatment Ms. Egan described herself , “When I looked in the mirror, I had what resembled a mild sunburn__which seemed fair enough since a sunburn was what got me here in the first place….As for my chest (decolletage), after about ten days of the requisite scaly, pixelated skin, the damage flaked off to reveal a smoother, brighter surface.” Ms. Egan also pledged to protect her flawless skin investment with promising “to always wear sunscreen from now on”, the best advice that we give to all of our patients. For those women with vertical cleavage lines of their decolletage, we have found that adding Ultherapy (non-invasive ultrasound) is very effective.
One of the most difficult aspects of our specialty is to distinguish what is real and effective from what is hype. We have been using Fraxel Dual in our practice since it first became available a few years ago. Now years later, it is nice to read in the current VOGUE Magazine that “At the dermatologist’s office, the stars (of getting rid of spots) are the Fraxel Dual Laser, which targets dark spots with pinpoint beams of energy, the Clear + Brilliant, a gentle laser ideal for those with less severe sun damage.” Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns that you may have regarding facial aesthetics. Be well.
