With the popularity of social media and the internet, physicians are answering more patient questions and concerns without ever meeting with the patient. This certainly is not how physicians are taught in medical school to interact with patients. As a physician, one must be very careful about giving advice to patients whom they have not met in person. I try to always preface my answers by emphasizing how important it is for the patient to contact their treating physician to discuss their concerns. Recently I exchanged emails with a young woman across the country who was distraught following her laser skin resurfacing treatments. This morning I recieved this email:
Dear Dr. Persky,
I just wanted to let you know that I took your advice and have been using what you suggested and my face is now healed from fraxel!! It turned out for the better and my skin looks wonderful! Thank you so very much! I think I was healing differently and now I am very happy with the results, I can’t thank you enough for helping me and putting my mind at rest!
I wanted to do fraxel in the first place mainly because of an indented scar on my check. It is still there (though a bit better now a month and 1/2 past fraxel), but I was wondering if you would ever recommend spot treatment for fraxel. Do you ever do this? Does it turn out well? I would just love to have beautiful skin before some important events come up in the next couple of months!
