“Today I see beauty everywhere I go, in every face I see, in every single soul.”
Kevyn Aucoin
Kevyn Aucoin (1962-2002) was an American make-up artist and photographer. His motto was that it was far more important to help a woman feel beautiful no matter what, and that makeup was simply his tool for helping her discover herself. A proponent of the philosophy that every woman is beautiful within, he was one of the best-paid celebrity make-up artists in history, up to $6000 per session. In his book “Making Faces” he shares his make up secrets while transforming celebrities to look like other famous faces (examples include transforming Celine Dion into Maria Callas, Lisa Marie Presley into Marilyn Monroe, Christina Ricci into Édith Piaf, Hilary Swank into Raquel Welch, and Winona Ryder into Elizabeth Taylor.)
The Ogee Curve of the Face is the double soft-S curves that are seen on the youthful face from an oblique angle. There is convex fullness in the lateral brow that softly curves in at the lateral eye canthus (where the upper and lower eyelids meet) that again softly curves outward on the upper cheek to again curve inward just above the mouth. As a face loses volume, it also loses the grace and harmony of the ogee curve of youth.
As Kevyn Aucoin was able to “make faces” using his make-up skills, we are privileged to have aesthetic tools with which we can create (youthful) faces by re-establishing the Ogee Curve. With the use of facial fillers such as Sculptra, Radiesse, Juvederm, and Restylane, along with selective tightening and lifting devices such as Ulthera we are able to create natural faces. We find that by using the classical divine proportions of the face described by Leonardo da Vinci plus the goal of restoring the Ogee Curve, and maybe even with a little help from our make-up artist friends, we can offer our patients natural rejuvenation results. Be well!
