RealSelf actual patient comment:

Hello! I want to make some adjustments to enhance my face. I love my nose but I’m unhappy with the flare of my nostrils. Do I need an entire rhinoplasty or is it possible to just slim my nostrils?
A.Great question.

Being a good candidate for a rhinoplasty is less about what your nose looks like and more about your expectations and rational for seeking one. A wide base of the nose is a common reason people seek rhinoplasty. For extreme widths a “synching suture” can help narrow the nose. Alar base surgery is an option but must happen with extreme caution and meticulous execution because scarring in this area is hard to correct.

Lastly, in black noses, increasing projection often will narrow the base. Perhaps not completely but may lessen the need for alar base surgery or any “alar-plasty.” I would recommend someone with expertise in ethnic and African American noses.

Be sure to choose your rhinoplasty surgeon carefully based on their skill, knowledge, experience, care and most importantly their natural artistic vision. A few excellent rhinoplasty surgeons that I would recommend are Rod Rohrich, MD (Dallas),Dean Toriumi,MD (Chicago), and Ari Hyman, MD (Encino, CA).
