Actual RealSelf Patient Comment:  Usually when getting Botox in the neck platysmal bands, the injectors tells me to smile, then relax. Then they inject. However today, they asked me to smile, never said relax, and they injected while I was smiling and platysmal bands were flexed. Is this a normal way to inject? Why does it hurt much more now? Will I be okay? What’s the worst that could happens?

Dr. Persky’s Answer:  As long as you injecting physician places the Botox properly in your muscle it does not matter whether your are smiling or relaxed. The pain that you are experiencing should be very short lived and is most likely due to a small bit of bleeding from the needle in the muscle. You will be okay and you do not need to worry about significant adverse effects, again as long as the proper amount of Botox was used.
