Is eyelid surgery best done by an eye surgeon or a plastic surgeon? Does preventative functional eyelid surgery exist?
RealSelf actual patient comment:
I can see my eyelid future & it isn’t pretty. Both of my parents qualified for (but never got) functional blepharoplasty. Now at age 51, I have skin dipping below my lid (only my lashes keep them up). I’m exploring surgery, but the doctor choices are overwhelming and I’m not sure what type of doctor to go with. Also, I can wait a decade and (likely) have functional surgery, but by then the skin will be thinner. Is preventative surgery a thing? Or is that wishful thinking?
A.You appear to be an excellent candidate for upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty.) Consult with multiple surgeons until you find one that you are comfortable with. Your surgeon should be board certified in plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery, or facial plastic surgery. As with any aesthetic procedure you should make sure that you choose your treating physician/surgeon based on their skill, knowledge, experience, care, and most importantly their natural artistic vision. A few great blepharoplasty surgeons that I recommend are Guy Masry, MD (Beverly Hills), Steven Dressner, MD (Santa Monica), and Ari Hyman (Encino, CA.). Good luck and be well.
