Actual RealSelf Patient Comment: ‘d like to have 1-2 vials of Sculptra injected, but have a mild autoimmune disease (alopecia areata). It usually only causes 1 small coin-sized patch of hair loss when it flares up. I am otherwise healthy, but am concerned because Sculptra is contraindicated in patients with autoimmune disease. Is Sculptra contraindicated in ALL cases of autoimmune disease, or generally just the most severe? Would it likely cause disease flare-ups, or otherwise be harmful in my case?

Dr. Persky’s Reply: Sculptra may be used in patients with mild autoimmune disease, and has been used in many patients over the years. I would not use it in patients with severe disease, particularily those patients who get very ill with flare ups. Feel free to contact me with any further questions or concerns. It your case it would be safe to be treated, please make sure to discuss this with your expert injecting physician.
