Of the many fine aesthetic physicians in this world, a few chose to spend 3 days in the name of their patients beauty at the first annual Summit in Aesthetic Medicine.  The beauty and aesthetic conference was all that it promised to be: FACTS, PERSPECTIVES, AND CONTROVERSY.  Meeting directors Christopher B. Zachary, FRCP and Lawrence Bass, MD, FACS deserve to be commended for the expert faculty they chose to bring together to share their wealth of experience (for those of you who occaisionally contact me regarding aesthetic physician referrals around the world, each of the physicians mentioned in this entry are definite “Dr. Persky recommendations” whom I would stake my reputation upon).

As promised by Dr. Zachary the presentations were brief, allowing for much discussion (sometimes “pithy”, but professionally respectful) between experts on the panels and the audience.  Gordon Sasaki, MD, FACS, Julius Few, MD,FACS, Jonathan Sykes, MD,FACS, Val Lambros,MD,FACS, Derek Jones,MD, George J. Hruza,MD, Mark Rubin,MD, E. Victor Ross, MD, and Howard K. Steinman,MD (to name a few, truly no pun intended Dr. Few) represented a portion of the talented aesthetic physicians from the core multispecialities in aesthetics: plastic surgery, facial plastic surgery (Dr. Sykes is the current President of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery), oculoplastic surgery, and dermatoplastics (first time that I have heard that) who shared their knowledge, experience, and professional life lessons.  Ironically, expert laser surgeons Eric F. “Berns” Bernstein,MD, FACS and A. Jay Burns,MD,FACS discussed the avoidence and treatment of laser burns (because of their expertise they receive many referrals of patients who suffered unfortunate complications elsewhere).

The choice of venue, The St. Regis Monarch Hotel, with it’s Italian arches was an appropriate setting for the gathering of physician artists.  The natural beauty of  Monarch Beach, the natural group of just “out for the summer” young surfers, and the most natural  two baby whales gliding south just past the waves but close enough to hear an exhalation from a blow hole, was consistent with the “natural” philosophy of aesthetic beauty that was discussed and agreed upon in the conference ballroom.  Despite the southern California “June Gloom”, out of town attendees marveled at the beauty of Dana Point and Laguna Beach.

Time to unpack.
