“Lips of a King“, a feature article in Blackbook Magazine (April/May 2012) shows off model, actor, and fashion icon Jaime King’s near perfect lips. Ms. King currently stars in “Hart of Dixie”. There are four different photos of her lips each with different products to create the perfect pair of lips. What is common to all of the photos is the da Vinci like proportions of Ms. King’s underlying lip structure. Both Drs. Sunder and Persky are able to create symmetric, natural lips that add to the harmony of their patient’s face.
Beautiful, natural lips should be proportional to the face as well as to each other. Da Vinci’s “divine proportion” or the “Phi proportion of beauty” is a ratio of 1 to 1.68, which in the case of lips means that the upper lip should be 70% the size of the lower lip. The upper lip tapers laterally, and has fullness in the middle. The lower lip has two medial “pillows” of fullness separated by a slight indentation in the middle. The main volume of the lower lip is in it’s central two thirds. When filling lips with Juvederm or Restylane, it is important to avoid filling the lower lip laterally, otherwise the lower lip may have that dreaded “sausage” look.
Once the underlying anatomy of the lip is beautifully proportioned, to obtain the ‘Lips of a King” (above) makeup guru Walter Obal suggests lining and filling in the lips with Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Liner in Fuscia 16C ($18 sephora.com), followed with an application of Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist in Natural N31 ($19).
For “Bold Lips” (left), line the fill in the lips with Make Up For Ever Aqua Lipliner Bright in Orange 17C ($18 sephora.com), and follow with an application of NYX Black Label Lipstick in Citrus ($8, nyxcosmetics.com).
For “Sultry Lips” (right), line and fill in lips with Dior Lip Liner Pencil in Holiday Red ($29, dior.com), line with pencil: fill in
Finally, for “Mysterious Lips” (below, and sorry but despite our best efforts not able to rotate photo for you), use MAC Lip Pencil in Magenta ($14, maccosmetics.com) to line and fill in lips, then follow with Dolce & Gabbana Lipstick in Purple Pearl ($30, dolcegabbanamakeup.com).
