Part way into Jennifer Egan’s Pulitzer Prize winning “A Visit from the Goon Squad” one of her characters defines“Structural Hatred” as… “A single woman in her forties who wears high-collared shirts to conceal the thready sinews of her neck will structurally despise the twenty-three-year-old girlfriend of a powerful male who not only employs said middle-aged female but is paying her way on this trip.” Loosening of neck skin is one of the most common complaints of women. Along with signs of jowling and mid-malar (cheek) troughs, crepe` neck skin is among the earliest signs of aging.
Ultherapy by Ulthera employs ultrasound energy to both tighten and lift the skin and muscles of the neck and face. I recently treated a woman who was 8 years status post rhytidectomy (face/neck lift) whose chief complaint was looseness of her neck skin. Four weeks following her Ultherapy treatment, both she and I are very pleased at the tightness of her neck as well her not requiring a revision surgery on her neck.
Who is the ideal patient for Ulthera? The 35 to 45 year old who is just noticing the earliest signs of aging that are causing a tired appearance. She or he wants to look rested, healthy, and natural while not having to undergo a surgical procedure. In fact, there is truly no downtime after the 90 minute Ultherapy treatment.
So while enjoying your summer reading, if your neck (or face, or brow) has you wishing that you could get rid of those “thready sinews of the neck”, then consider Ultherapy as an excellent cure of “structural hatred”. Be well.
