JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC is a dermal filler specifically designed to add volume to the cheeks and mid-face and reduce the signs of aging. It contains a hyaluronic acid gel and was the first filler FDA approved for deep injection in the cheek area to correct age-related volume loss.

Can JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC cheek filler look natural?
As with all aesthetic treatments, it is not the product but rather the injecting physician’s artistic vision, skill, experience, and ability to create a natural aesthetic appearance that helps the patient achieve their cosmetic rejuvenation goals. Dr. Persky strives for results that are not overdone and believes that less is more. If desired, more product may be added at a two-week follow-up visit.
Does cheek filler injection hurt?
We care very much about our patients’ comfort during their treatment. JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC has local anesthesia mixed into the syringe. We apply ice simultaneously to the patient’s face, which acts to distract the brain from feeling the JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injection. Most patients comment that their treatment was easy with very little discomfort. There may be mild tenderness in the injected areas for a few days following treatment, but it is rare among patients.
What does JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC cost?
The value in JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC is not in the commodity or product itself but in the skill that applies it. Dr. Persky personally performs all JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC treatments on his patients. The cost of a syringe of JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC at our office varies depending on the number of syringes used. Dr. Persky’s charges are result based, not based on “per syringe.” As a general guideline, the first syringe is around $1,250, with a lower cost for additional syringes used in the same treatment session.
U.S. studies showing that JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC lasts up to two years were based on using five to six syringes. Recent MRI studies have shown that JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC may last much longer in the majority of patients, up to 10 years without further treatment. Thanks to his Master Injection Technique, Dr. Persky is able to use one or two syringes strategically placed to get lasting results.
How long does JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC cheek filler last?
U.S. studies have shown JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC to last up to two years, though recent MRI studies have shown hyaluronic acid cross-linked fillers present up to 10 years following injection.
Can other fillers be used with JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC?
Yes. Using JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC does not affect the use of other facial fillers. We particularly like to compliment JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC cheek volume by using Sculptra® to shape the rest of the face.

What does JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC cheek filler do?
As you age, the cheek area loses its youthful shape. Starting at age 25, there is facial boney loss in the cheek bones. The cheeks flatten out, and the skin may begin to sag because the underlying scaffolding diminishes. JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injectable filler is designed to reverse these signs of aging.
The gel is injected into the cheek area deep below the facial muscles on top of the facial bones, lifting the facial tissue. It adds volume to the cheek area, resulting in a smoother contour and a more youthful appearance.
Where is JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC used?
JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC is FDA approved for restoring volume to the cheek area. It has been used off label in other facial areas, including the chin, jawline, temple, and hairline, to lift and rejuvenate the face.
How is JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC different from other fillers?
The Vycross® Technology allows JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC to last for up to two years (and longer in many cases). JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injects easily and smoothly, and it lasts longer than all other hyaluronic acid fillers, which typically last six to nine months.
How long has JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC been used in the United States?
JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC was FDA approved for use in the U.S. in December 2013. It has been used in Europe since 2008.
Questions About Injection Sessions
How many JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injection sessions will I need?
Most patients need only one injection session. We ask our patients to return to our office for a follow-up visit 10–14 days after their treatment for evaluation and possibly a small additional amount of JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC.
What areas of the face are improved by JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injections in the cheeks?
Amazingly, the simple placement of JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC in the cheeks improves the appearance of the tear trough hollow under the eyes, as well as the nasolabial fold, and even laxity and wrinkles in the upper and lower cheeks, jawline, jowls, temples, and marionette area.
What should I expect at a JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injection session?
At our office, patients are first examined and evaluated to determine whether JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC will benefit them. Most patients can benefit from JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC rejuvenation of their cheeks.
Pre-treatment photos are taken. Then, the patient’s face is washed with an antibacterial soap. The injection session is similar to having other filler injections. Depending on the amount of facial volume needed, anywhere from one to six syringes of JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC may be used, but most patients opt for one or two syringes.
Questions About Your JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC Recovery
Will I bruise from JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injections?
JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC is injected deep, just above the bone and below the muscle in the cheeks. There is the possibility of minor to more noticeable bruising. As with all injectable treatments, we ask our patients not to take any medications that cause the blood to thin, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, anti-inflammatories, or other supplements that may increase the chance of bruising for at least 7–10 days before their injections. Patients are encouraged to use both oral and topical Arnica to help minimize bruises. Should bruising occur, it can be easily hidden with concealer.
Will I have lumps and bumps after JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC is injected?
After the injection is completed, we palpate our patient’s face to ensure that there are no lumps or bumps. If any are felt, they can be easily massaged down and smoothed out. A bump from a deep bruise can also occur, but these usually resolve within a few days.
How will I look immediately after a JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injection?
There is an immediate notable improvement in facial volume. There may be a variable amount of swelling that usually resolves within two to three days.
Are there any special instructions to follow after JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injections?
Patients should not have any dental work for one week prior and for two weeks after injectable facial fillers, including JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC. Patients should not exercise and should avoid heat and sun exposure for at least 24 hours after JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injections to minimize the risk of swelling and bruising. Patients are given ice packs to use for a few minutes after their injections. We ask our patients to try to sleep on their backs with their heads elevated above their hearts (up on two pillows) for two nights if possible.
Questions About JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC Complications
Can JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC be reversed or dissolved if I don’t like it?
JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC is a hyaluronic acid. It can be dissolved with an injected enzyme hyaluronidase. It takes a bit longer for JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC to dissolve than other HA fillers, like the original JUVÉDERM® XC or Restylane®.
Are there any complications with JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC?
There are very rare patients with allergies to other hyaluronic acid products (JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, Belotero Balance®). These patients should not receive JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC injections.
As with any injectable treatment, your injector should be an expert in facial anatomy and injection techniques to avoid injecting the product into a blood vessel. Dr. Persky’s training and experience as a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon gives his patients the best chance to avoid complications with injectable fillers.
